Sam was born on Beaty Creek in Delaware County. His mother and father were Thomas Jefferson Fields and Alta Barlow Hutchison Fields. He had nine siblings: Roy, Desmond, Bill, Denver, Ruby, Winona, Dollie, Callie, and Thelma. He was of Cherokee blood.

Sam married Betty Leah Wood on Nov. 20, 1947. They had a farm in Jay. Sam was the Delaware County clerk for 37 years, and preceded Betty in death in 1996.

Sam had a way with a fiddle. He was a talented fiddle player and it was a regular thing for musicians to gather at the Fields Farm every weekend to make music.

Sam and Betty raised four sons: Kenny, Sammy, John and Joe Dee.

Uncle Sam made so many memories for his nieces and nephews and we miss him very much.
