Benjamin Sherrod was one of the early settlers of Lawrence County. He was a planter-baron and chief promoter of the Tuscumbia, Courtland and Decatur Railroad.

Col Benj Sherrod, was born in Halifax, NC, 16th January, 1777. He father, Benjamin Sherrod II was born October 29, 1751. He married Mary Ricks. Benjamin Sherrod II died in 1776, leaving no will; his wife Mary was appointed Administratrix of his estate and filed an inventory November 17, 1777 in Halifax County, NC.
On January 16, 1777, several months after the death of Benjamin II, his only child was born. This is the Benjamin Sherrod (III) buried in Courtland, Alabama. His mother, Mary Ricks Sherrod, later married William
Coupland. After his mother's early death, Benjamin III was reared by his mother's only brother, Isaac Ricks.

Colonel Sherrod was educated at Chapel Hill, and migrated, when a young man to Washington, Wilkes County, Ga. In the war of 1812, he was an army contractor.
His first wife was Eliza Watkins, daughter of Mr Samuel Watkins, who was a merchant of Petersburg, Va, and a large planter of Broad River. After the death of his wife, in 1821, he removed to Lawrence County and settled a large plantation called "Cotton Garden" on Spring Creek.
In 1822 he married his second wife, Mrs Tabitha Goode Watkins, the widow of Coleman Watkins.
He had dark-blue eyes, Roman nose, and a very expressive face.
As a planter, Colonel Sherrod was very skillful. The success which followed Colonel Sherrod's farming operations demonstrated the skilfulness of his management. He added plantation to plantation in quick succession.
Colonel Sherrod was one of the chief promoters of the Tuscumbia, Courtland and Decatur Railroad. He was named as president of the board of directors.
The descendants of Colonel Sherrod have been men of great respectability and intelligence. By his first wife, Eliza Watkins, he had six children - four sons and two daughters, to-wit: Felix M, Federick O, Samuel W, George, Antoinette and Eliza. Of these George and Eliza died quite young.
Colonel Sherrod married a second time to Tabitha Goode Watkins, widow of Coleman Watkins. Colonel Sherrod, by this second marriage, had four children; A Eliza who died young; B Adelaide, who married Samuel W Shackelford; C Charles Fox and William C.
