Charles Sherrod, Beloved Citizen, Dies In Hospital
Solicitor of Lawrence County Succumbs In Birmingham

Charles M. Sherrod, solicitor of Lawrence County, and one of North Alabama's most prominent men died in St. Vincent's hospital in Birmingham early today, following an operation.

Funeral services for the distinguished man will be held Saturday afternoon in Courtland, his home and interment will be made in the cemetery there. The death of Mr. Sherrod was a shock to citizens of North Alabama and news of the seriousness of his illness did not become public until a day or two ago.

Judge Sherrod was a graduate of the Cumberland University law school and had served Lawrence County in many capacities. He was a member of the state legislature in 1907 and a member of the state senate in 1911 representing the counties of Lawrence and Morgan. Upon the death of Probate Judge Kumpe, he was appointed by Governor Henderson to fill out the unexpired portion of the term.

Following the death of the late Solicitor James Irwin, he was appointed county solicitor of Lawrence County and served in that office until the time of his death.

The deceased had resided in Courtland all of his life and was beloved throughout the county. He was a son of the late Congressman W.C. Sherrod, who represented at one time, this district. His mother was a sister of General Morgan, the famous Confederate leader during the Civil War.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Mrs. William Moseley Jr, of Decatur and Mrs. A.M. Grimsley of Fayette, Ala; one son, Morgan Sherrod of Courtland.

The body will arrive here this afternoon at three o'clock from Birmingham and will be conveyed immediately to the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Shackelford, in Courtland. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon from that residence by Dr. Lewis, pastor of the Courtland Presbyterian Church. Interment will be made in the Courtland Cemetery, Brown directing. The service at the grave will be in charge of the Courtland Masonic lodge, of which Mr. Sherrod had been a distinguished member. He was a member also of the Albany-Decatur Grotto club.
