Art N. Cline, 85, of Hartman passed away Wednesday, November 4, 2009, in Fort Smith.
He was born in Hartman and went to school there. After graduation, he started his career in the Army and proudly served his country for 30 years, retiring as a Sergeant Major. During his enlistment, he was a veteran of World War II, Vietnam and Korea. He served numerous tours of duty overseas including Japan, Aleutian Islands and Germany, just to name a few. He received an honorable discharge and was awarded several medals and honors including two Bronze Service Stars, WWII Victory Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal & eight Good Conduct Medals, Meritorious Service Medal and Army Commendation Medal.
After retirement, he worked for a local manufacturing company before becoming a rural postal mail carrier in the Hartman community, while also raising livestock. He was also the caretaker of West Mount Zion Cemetery for many years. He took great pride in his hometown cemetery, donating his time, services and money to its upkeep and beautification. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to his friends and neighbors and would often contribute to causes without anyone, outside of his immediate family, knowing about this. He enjoyed reading books and newspapers, keeping up to date on current events and watching sports on TV, especially the Razorbacks.
Art was preceded in death by his wife, Maria (Bayer) Cline of Reid, Germany, and his parents, Edwin Cline and Vera (Baskin) Cline, both of Hartman.
He is survived by three loving daughters, Roswitha Cline of Fort Smith, Sylvia Dixon and her husband, Ted, of Hilo, Hawaii and Brenda Fillmore and her husband, Ron, of Fowler, Colorado; two granddaughters, Keeley and Raina Fillmore of Fowler, Colorado; one brother, Oscar (Snooks) Cline of Hartman; and a host of beloved friends.
Memorial services will be held at West Mount Zion Methodist Church in Hartman at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, November 14, with Rev. Burnett King officiating under the direction of Hardwicke Funeral Home. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia with full military honors conducted by the Army.
Pallbearers will be Ed Wewers, Steve Stephan, Ben F. Hardgrave, Ben A. Hardgrave, Joe Fowler, and John (Catfish) Rogers.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his honor be made to the St. Edward Mercy Medical Center: Home Care, Hospice & Palliative Care, P. O. Box 17000, Fort Smith, AR 72917-7000.
