"Mary" Maria Catharina Kappes was the daughter of Andreas Michael Kappes ("1 Dec 1771 in Baden," son of Sebastian Kappes 1737-1807) and Apollonia Schaefer (12 Oct 1785 in Baden"). She was born in Evangelisch, Wertheim, Mosback, Baden, Germany and christened on 11 Dec 1819 in Wertheim, Mosback, Baden, Germany (FS).

She married Henry Lederer on unknown date and place. They had Lederer children:
Nancy, 1841 at sea (Johann John Stephani), below
unknown (per 1900 census)
unknown (per 1900 census)

On the 1860 Chicago, Ward 5, Cook, IL census, I found gardener Henry Leterer (sic), 50, born in Bavaria, with $8K in real estate; Mary Leterer, 38, Badan; Emma Stephani, 2, IL and Fanny Stephani, 1, IL. (The latter were their grandchildren.)

On the 1880 Chicago, Cook, IL census, I found florist Henry Letterer, 70, born in Bavaria, like his parents; wife Mary C. Letterer, 59, born in Baden, like her parents and adopted grandson Adolph Stepani, 13, IL, parents in Prussia and (mom) New York. They lived at 1062 W. Madison. A Wm Neff family lives at 1064 W. Madison.

On the 1900 Precinct 8, Chicago, Ward 12, Cook, IL census, I found widow Marie Lederer, age 81, born Dec 1819, married 60 years-about 1840, born in Germany, immigrated in 1841, parents born in Germany, had 3 children, none living. She resided with her NIECE, Anna Holleybug, 20, born Mar 1880 in IL, her parents born in Germany. They lived at 1062 Madison Street. (Who was Anna's mother?)

Cook Co., IL Death Register, 1878-1922, cert. #9315, lists widow Mary Lederer, born in Germany, died in Chicago, Cook Co., IL, aged 83 years, on 3 Dec 1902, a housewife, buried at Rose Hill. The informant was S K Falls.

According to the Rosehill Cemetery office (8-2020), Mrs Emma Stephani Hautau (daughter of Nancy Lederer Stephani) was the "owner of the 4 graves in plot SW quarter, Section G, in or near lot 104." It included her grandparents parents Henry Lederer and Mary M Kappes plus husband Henry Hautau and Emma's. Only Henry Lederer has a marker (sic) here. Next to him is Henry Hautau, then Emma and last on the end is her mom, Mary. Section G and J with other family connections, are across from each other. Marker was not located for Henry Lederer (see 30 April 2021 photo).
