Melvin Leo Bass, 75, of Greentop, Missouri, died Tuesday morning (December 12, 1995) at the St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.

He was born March 31, 1920 in Boone County, Iowa the son of Floyd and Ella (Kelly) Bass. On April 20, 1946 in Nashua, Iowa he married Virginia Pierson who preceded him in death on March 8, 1991.

Also preceding him in death were his parents.

He is survived by one son, Terry Bass of Greentop, Missouri; one daughter, Tammy L Karlsson and husband Rolfe of Des Moines, Iowa; one sister, Francis Godwin of Boone, Iowa; two grandchildren, Renee Ray of Greentop, Missouri and Robert Karlsson of Miami Beach, Florida; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Melvin was raised in Boone, Iowa where he attended the public schools. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1941 to 1946 in the Pacific Theater as a Sergeant. After his marriage he and his wife lived in the Des Moines, Iowa area where he worked at the Armco Pipe and Steel for thirty years. After his retirement he moved to Greentop, Missouri and farmed until his health failed.

He had a great love for farming and the outdoors. He enjoyed being with his family and help raise not only his own children but his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was well respected by his neighbors and friends. He was a member of the Greentop Methodist Church in Greentop, Missouri.

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, (December 16, 1995) at the Davis-Playle Chapel with the Reverend Monte Peterson officiating. Music will be provided by Kelly Fry singing "Grandpa" and "How Great Thou Art" accompanied by Julia Mollick, Organist. Burial will be in the Greentop Cemetery in Greentop, Missouri with Military Rites conducted by VFW Post #2508, DAV Post #48 and American Legion Post #20.

Pallbearers will be Bill Ertel, John Robinson, C. W. Allen, Freddie Lay, Jack Erwin, and Bill Lawrence.

Visitation will be all day Friday (December 15,1995) with the family receiving friends from 7:00 to 9:00 Friday evening at the Davis-Playle Funeral Home, 202 East Washington 665-3744
