On Tuesday, April 19, 1892, Coroner Eastman received word from Columbia that a Mexican War veteran, William Andrews, was found dead in his cabin on Yankee Hill. He later determined it to be true.

Mr. Andrews was 69 years old. He served in the war with Captain William W.I. Kelly's Company of Independent Florida Volunteers.

He was an old resident of Tuolumne County and respected by all who knew him.

He was laid to rest in the Columbia Cemetery on the Wednesday following his death.

William Andrews was listed on the 1870 and 1880 census as living in the Columbia area and working as a miner. He lived alone and apparently never married. He and his parents were born in England. His mother's name was Susan, and she was born in Wimbish, Essex, England, in 1791.

Since William Andrews was a veteran of the Mexican War, he would have been living in the United States about 1846-1848 when the war was in session.

He was a veteran of the War with Mexico and served in Captain William W.I. Kelly's Company of Independent Florida Volunteers.

There is a possibility that Mr. Andrews was buried in the Sonora City Cemetery and that it was a newspaper error that he was buried in Columbia.
