Joseph was born in Raphoe, County Donegal, Ireland and educated by his father, a Professor of Mathematics. He joined his brother in Danville, Kentucky and belonged to the 6th Confederate Cavlary Battalion. He was wounded June 1864 in Kentucky, went to Canada and joined Bennett Young. Never married. After the War he went into business with his brother, later selling his interests and moving to Deming, New Mexico, where he founded the Masonic Lodge. Appointed collector of Internal Revenue for New Mexico and Arizona, and accumulated a fortune. His body was returned to Kentucky and buried in Bellevue Cemetery, Danville.
