Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. The last General appointed to the Confederate side, he was an 1849 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point. After the start of the Civil War, he raised "Brevard's Partisan Rangers" in 1861, and attained the rank of Major in 1863. Becoming Adjutant General to General Robert E. Lee, he was captured by the Union army at the Battle of Saylor's Creek in April 1865.
