Alice Buesing Edens Hagerman
Dec. 23, 1906 — Dec. 5, 2004

Private services will be Thursday for Tracy resident Alice Buesing Edens Hagerman, 97, who died in her sleep Dec. 5.

Mrs. Hagerman was a professional seamstress who had owned Baby Dee's Homemade Baby Clothes in Oakland, where she designed and made custom outfits, stuffed animals and other items.

According to longtime neighbor Gretchen Talley, Mrs. Hagerman was known throughout the Bay Area for the beautiful clothing she made and could design anything from a picture or combine two or three patterns into one dress. She also made purses to match the clothes she sewed.
"Though she never drove a car, she was always on time for her fitting appointments, and her reputation was legend," said Talley, who lived next door to Mrs. Hagerman.

She sewed costumes for performers, such as the Oakland Raiders cheerleaders and the late professional wrestlers Pepper Gomez and Ray Stevens. She made hundreds of wedding dresses, bridesmaid gowns and flower-girl outfits, and she also made jewelry and Christmas ornaments.

Born in Davenport, Iowa, Mrs. Hagerman moved to California with only a high-school education. She most recently lived in Tracy, where she bought a house by herself 16 years ago. She previously lived in Hayward, and before that in Oakland until 1955.

An avid baseball fan, Mrs. Hagerman loved the Oakland A's and Atlanta Braves, but didn't think so much of the New York Yankees or San Francisco Giants. She enjoyed watching ice skating and Fox News. She knew more about current events than her friends and neighbors and always brought them up to speed when they visited, Talley said.

Talley remembers Mrs. Hagerman as an "amazing, hard-working, independent woman who focused her life on raising her family." Friends and family had been rooting for Mrs. Hagerman, the oldest living person in her family, to make it to her 98th birthday Dec. 23.

Although sewing became more difficult as she got older, Mrs. Hagerman spent years making quilts for her children and grandchildren. She also collected dolls, all of which she named and planned to leave to her family. Mrs. Hagerman took care of her own funeral arrangements before she died.

Mrs. Hagerman will be remembered as an accomplished, determined woman with an indomitable spirit and a great recall of history.

She is survived by children Todd Hagerman of Tracy, Lynn Hagerman of Florida, Donna Blakemore of Idaho, and their families.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Hagerman.

Private services for Mrs. Hagerman will be Thursday. Interment will be in Lone Tree Cemetery, 24591 Fairview Ave., in Hayward.
