Byzantine Emperor. He was was crowned co-emperor by his father, Constantine VII, in 945 AD. In 959 AD his father died, possibly poisoned, and he succeeded to the throne. He soon replaced his father's courtiers with his own friends and sent Constantine's widow, Helena, to a monastery. He placed military affairs in the hands of his capable generals, who fought successful campaigns to recover Crete from the Muslims and also against the Emir of Aleppo, Sayf al-Dula. He also ordered campaigns to halt Magyar incursions into the Balkans. He died suddenly on a hunting expedition, and it was suspected that he had been poisoned by his wife, Theophano, who then married his successor, the General Nikephoros Phokas.
