He soon replaced his father's courtiers with his own friends and sent Constantine's widow, Helena, to a monastery. He placed military affairs in the hands of his capable generals, who fought successful campaigns to recover Crete from the Muslims and also against the Emir of Aleppo, Sayf al-Dula. He also ordered campaigns to halt Magyar incursions into the Balkans. He died suddenly on a hunting expedition, and it was suspected that he had been poisoned by his wife, Theophano, who then married his successor, the General Nikephoros Phokas.
