Joseph Melville Broughton was born 1852 in Auburn, Wake County, NC, the youngest of 7 known surviving children (4 boys/3 girls) born to farmer Joseph L. Broughton Jr. and his wife, Mary "Polly" Bagwell.

He is the paternal grandson of Joseph L. Broughton Sr. of Essex County, VA who came to NC ca. 1795 and married Mary "Polly" Stancil of Johnston Co, NC. On his mother's side, he was the maternal grandson of Nathan B. Bagwell & Sarah "Sally/Polly" Mainor of Auburn, Wake Co.

Joseph was only one year old when his father died in 1853. His older brother, Gaston, became the man of the house while his mother continued to run the 250-acre farm in Auburn and raise her 7 children. By August, 1859, the Broughton family had to sell of the family farm, and his mother and younger brothers moved to Raleigh, where Polly supported the family as a seamstress.

Elder brother, Gaston, who married in 1859 would go on to serve in the CSA with the rank of Lieutenant; while his older brother, Needham Bryan Broughton was sent to school, and by age 11 was apprenticed as a printer. (He later became quite wealthy and prominent as a partner in Edwards & Broughton Printing Co. in Raleigh.)

Joseph, too, was educated and as a young man was a bookkeeper in Raleigh. On March 5, 1873, the 21-year old married 18-year old Sallie A. Harris and settled into married life in Raleigh.

Joseph & Sallie would become parents to 7 known children (3 boys/4 girls): Thomas Broughton (ca. 1874), Margaret "Maggie" Broughton (1876), Florence Broughton (1878), Dr. Ernest Harris Broughton, DDS (1883-1966), Minnie Broughton (1887), Joseph Melville Broughton Jr. (1888-1949), and Mildred Broughton (1891).

Joseph left the world of accounting and turned his interests to real estate, and became a successful real estate developer in Raleigh.

Joseph Melville Broughton Sr. was widowed in 1910 when his wife of 37 years passed at age 56. He survived her 7 years, passing in 1917 at age 65.

Of his 2 surviving sons, Ernest became a Dentist in Raleigh and married Lessie Ellis of Clayton, becoming father to 2 known children. Ernest is buried here in Oakwood. His youngest son, and namesake, Joseph Melville Broughton Jr. (who went by the name J. Melville Broughton), became Governor of North Carolina (1941-1945), and was the first Raleigh native to occupy the Executive Mansion. In 1948, Broughton Jr. was elected to the United States Senate, after defeating William B. Umstead, the appointed incumbent, in the Democratic primary. He took office on December 31, 1948, but his service in the Senate was brief, as he died in March 1949. He is buried in Montlawn Memorial Cemetery in Raleigh.
