Charles Leo "Gabby" Hartnett

Hall of Fame Major League Baseball Player. Born in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, he was a catcher making his debut for the Chicago Cubs on April 12, 1922. For twenty seasons, he played with the Chicago Cubs (1922-40) and New York Giants (1941). As the Cubs primary catcher, he caught 100 or more games 12 times, led the National League in putouts four times, in assists and fielding average six times and won the National League Most Valuable Player Award in 1935. He also was a six time All-Star (1933-38). At the 1932 World Series at Chicago between the Cubs and New York Yankees, he was behind the plate when Babe Ruth hit his called shot homerun over the center field fence. He concluded his career with a record of 1912 hits, 867 runs scored, 236 homeruns, 1179 runs batted in and a .297 batting average. In 1955, he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. He die at age 72 in Park Ridge, Illinois. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
