John Ross Gretzinger, 97, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009 at the Westbrooke Manor Assisted Living Facility, Zephyrhills, Fla., where he had been a resident since September 2008.

He was born July 17, 1912, in Peru to Jacob William and Mary Alice (Smith) Gretzinger. He attended school in Peru through high school graduation in 1930. He graduated from Purdue University School of Engineering in 1934. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Tau Beta Pi (all-engineering honorary society) and Pi Tau Sigma (mechanical engineering honorary society). Upon graduation from Purdue, he began a 41-year career with General Motors, starting at AC Spark Plug Division in Flint, Mich.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, active duty from 1942 to 1946 and reserve duty until 1953, separating with the rank of major.

He married Mary Virginia Antrim, also of Peru, in May of 1934. Their 56-year marriage ended when she preceded him in death in June 1990. He married Ann Margaret (Carlson) Thompson, Pompano Beach, Fla., and she preceded him in death in December 1995. On Aug. 15, 1996 at age 84, he married Lorena Ellington (Morris) Holliman, Dallas, Texas, and she survives.
Surviving besides his wife is a son, John Jacob Gretzinger and wife, Shirley, Peru; a daughter, Mary Frances Gretzinger, Zephyrhills, Fla.; six grandchildren, Patrick Gretzinger, Andrew Gretzinger and wife Jennifer, Robyn Gretzinger, Jesse Gretzinger, Elizabeth Mattin and Daniel Mattin; and one great-grandchild, Kathleen Elizabeth Graettinger (daughter of Andrew and Jennifer).

A service celebrating the life of John R. Gretzinger will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010 at the First Presbyterian Church. 102 W. Main, Peru, with Pastor Larry Moslener and Andrew Gretzinger officiating.

Burial will be at Salem Cemetery, Miami County.

Family and friends will gather at the Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home, 84 W. Main, Peru, from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday.

Memorial donations may be made to the Westbrooke Manor Activity Fund, the American Cancer Society or the charity of one's choice.

This was my Uncle John. He was also preceded in death by his sisters Lenora Shaw, Alice Durbin and his brother Kirk Lund (my dad).
