Roman Catholic Church Saint. In Latin his name was Valentinus, of whom very little is known and he is widely recognized as a 3rd-Century Roman Catholic Saint. According to tradition, on the day of February 14, 269, a young man named Valentine was executed in Rome, Italy. According to legend, he was a young priest who defied the Emperor Claudius's order by aiding Christians being persecuted for their faith in Rome. Arrested for his activities, he converted to the total belief of his faith while in prison, would not renouncing it and refused to sacrifice to pagan gods. Thus, he was tortured before being beaten with clubs and beheaded, becoming a martyr. Whatever the truth is behind the legends, St. Valentine's day has since become a day most connect with love, romance and friendship.
