An elderly Boyle County man was burned to death in a brush fire Monday afternoon in the vicinity of New Pike Knob, near Mitchellsburg. Boyle County Deputy Coroner Mike Wilder reported that Henry Esco Holt, 88 of Parksville Rt. 1, died after apparently being overcome by smoke when he attempted to extinguish a fire in an open field. Burns were over about 95 per cent of his body. Wilder said Mr. Holt had been cutting trees, chopping off the smaller limbs and burning them. His chain saw and gas can were found near the scene. Joe Diets, district forest ranger, and D.W. Helm, law enforcement officer, are investigating the death. Local Forest Ranger J.D. Wilson said he was notified of the fire about 1:45 p.m. Monday by the pilot of the spotter airplane which watches for fires in this area. Wilson arrived at the scene about 2:15 p.m. where about an acre of grass and brush had been burned in an area just off of New Pike Knob Rd. Mr. Holt's body was discovered by Gayle Gibson, fireman with Engine 5 at Mitchellsburg Eight. Firemen from Mitchellsburg Engine 5 and Forkland Engine responded to the fire call. Parksville Rescue Squad members, Fred Edwards, Arthur Broyles and John Walls, assisted at the scene. Service Set Funeral for Mr. Holt will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Mitchellsburg Church of God in Boyle County. The body is at Bailey & Wilder Funeral Home, Perryville.
