Born in Haverhill, Massachusetts, he was selected as the show's host because he had written numerous volumes to Time-Life's "Encyclopedia of Gardening." Additionally, he authored several gardening books, including "Crockett's Victory Garden" (1977), "Crockett's Indoor Garden" (1978), and Crockett's Flower Garden" (1981). In 1978, he was nominated for a daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Host or Hostess in a Talk, Service, or Variety Series. He died at the age of 63 while vacationing in Jamaica.
