Clay County Courier published on Friday, June 17, 1904: James D. Curtis died at his home near this place last Fridayat 6:00 P.M., age 87 years 7 mos. and 19 days. He was born in Buncombe Co., Oct 21, 1816.
He came to this country with his father, Rev Amos Curtis, aboutthe year 1836 and has lived within a few miles from that place from that timeuntil his death. He married a sister to the Editor of this paper, Dec 24th, 1839, whose name was Clarissa H Sanderson. Mrs Curtis died about 16 years ago.He had been a member of M.E. Church South and was perhaps the oldest Mason. His remains were laid beside the side of his companion at the Cemetery of the Methodist Church Sunday A.M."
