JOHN DORRANCE.
After an illness of but three days John Dorrance, one of the best-known residents of Bristol died of pneumonia at his house , corner of Radcliffe and Washington streets, on Sunday afternoon, March 26, at 2.20 o'clock.
John Dorrance was practically known to every man, woman and child in the borough, The son of the
Iate John and Mary Morris Dorrance, he was born in Bristol on May 22, 1843, nearly 66 years ago. He was a man of somewhat peculiar disposition and propensities but was kindhearted and had many worthy traits of character which were not revealed to the general public, he was a man of wealth and while he bestowed bis favors with a lavish hand upon members of his family, he apparently cared little for the luxuries awl pleasures that his wealth could easily obtain. His death came as a distinct surprise, as but few were even aware of his illness.
Mr. Dormoce received his early education at Mt Holly, N. J., academy and after his student days entered the flour and grist mill of his father on Mill Street, a historic landmark which is mentioned in the early histories of Bristol. The mill Pond and ruce which was just recently sold to the Pennsylvania Railroad company belonged to the mill property and was a portion of the Dorrance estate. The walls of the old mill still stand as relics commemorating an ancient Industry. long since ended.
At the death of his father over forty years ago, two sons, John, and Arthur Dorrance, conducted the business under the firm name of J. & A Dorrance. Later the business was sold to the Rogers Brothers
On January 13, 1878, Mr. Dorrance and Miss Eleaner Thompson, of Penns Manor, were married. He leaves besides his widow six children, three sons and three daughters, John T. Dorrance, who is vice-president of the Campbell Preserving. Company of Camden of which his uncle, Arthur Dorrance, is president; Dr. G. Morris Dorrance, of Philadelphia, Mrs. Earl Stetson Hood, of Philadelphia, Mrs. Robert H Blake, of New York, Miss E Winifred Dorrance and Arthur C. Dorrance, of Bristol. The latter is a student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in Boston. G Morris Dorrance, president of the Bristol Water Company, and Arthur Dorrance, of the Campbell Preserving Company, of Camden, are brothers of the deceased.
