Mrs. James Halstead

Dies at Merced

Mrs. Della Halstead, 67, died Sunday morning at Mercy Hospital, following a brief illness. She had been a resident of Merced the past 20 years. A native of Missouri, but had spent the greater part of her life in California. For a great many years she lived in Coulterville and later in El Portal before moving to Merced.

Surviving are her husband, James Halstead, also a native of Coulterville, four daughters, Mrs. Guelda Bauhn [sic] of Merced, Mrs. Hazel Ellis and Mrs. Nettie Hauch of Yosemite, and Mrs. Leah Hamrich of El Portal; one son James Halstead Jr. of Merced; two brothers, Charlie Rouse of Yosemite and Cyrus (Bud) Rouse of Lodi; and two sisters, Mrs. Maggie Richie of Yuba City and Mrs. Molly Ramsey of Tuolumne.

The services were conducted at the Ivers & Alcorn Chapel in Merced by Rev. Willis M. Whitaker. Walter Mink sang at the services, accompanied by Mrs. J. H. Alcorn. Interment was made in the Asphodel Cemetery.

Delcena "Della" Cegal (Rouse) Halstead was born Jan. 23, 1870, in Rockville, Bates Co., MO.

Delcena was the daughter of Ira Rouse from Indiana and his second wife, Nancy Ann Burks Higdon.

She married George Shimer Sr 1867-1915, the son of James Shimer 1827-1903 and Mary Keesey, and had three children: * Hazel A Shimer Ellis 1890-1954
* Jeanette Rouse Shimer Hauck 1894-1960
* George Shimer Jr 1895-1927 Secondly,

she married James Shimer Halstead 1879-1949, the son of James Halstead 1852-1901 and Armanda Shimer, and had three children:
* Guelda Pearl Halstead 1903-1995
* Leah Elizabeth Halstead Hamrich Webster 1905-1980
* James Roy Halstead 1909-1975
