Cremation rights have been accorded at her request. Family will receive friends from 3:00-4:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 13, 2010, at Boardman Smith Funeral Home in Springfield, Illinois, with a memorial service immediately following. Burial will take place at Oak Ridge Cemetery in a private ceremony at a later date.
Mrs. Ensel was born on July 15, 1917, in Auburn, Illinois, the daughter of James and Mable Mac Murdo. She was a graduate of Auburn High School. Eileen married Van Pickerell of Springfield; he was killed in a vehicle accident a few years later. She married Lee W. Ensel, an attorney in Springfield, in 1954.
Eileen was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lee Ensel; brothers, Robert, Gerald, Donald and Alfred Owen; and sister, Jean Ramsey.
She is survived by her sister, Florence Sample of Auburn, and several nieces and nephews and their families, Judy Dodd, Donna Burton, and Beverly Ervin, all of Auburn, Tim Ramsey, Normal, Illinois, John Ramsey, Tulsa, Oklahoma, Ken Mac Murdo, Southport, North Carolina, John Mac Murdo, Harrison, Ohio, Fred Mac Murdo, Santa Clarita, California, Jim Mac Murdo, DeKalb, Illinois. Brynn Henderson of Springfield, Christopher Bender, California, and Brynn Bender of Arizona.
Eileen was very active in many community affairs, serving as past president of Women's Symphony Guild, Red Cross Board, Sangamon Lawyers Auxiliary, Mary H. Blackstock Circle, and Kings Daughters. She belonged to the Sangamo Club and the Island Bay Yacht Club. In 2008, the Japanese Garden at the University of Illinois Springfield was dedicated to Mr. and Mrs. Lee W. Ensel for their generous donations.
