PALMER, TN -- Velma "Jean-Jean" Grooms, 73, died Saturday, February 6, 2010, at her home surrounded by her family.

She was retired from the Grundy County School System after 41 years teaching at Palmer and Swiss Memorial. She was a member of the Palmer United Methodist Church (where she would often sing and wrote all Christmas and Easter programs), the Order of the Eastern Star No. 266 at Tracy City, TN, and the Gruetli-Laager Senior Center. She served as the vice president of the Fall Creek Cemetery Association.

Jean was known for her famous chili, her poems, helping with local fund-raisers and fish fries.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Mae Meeks Oliver; husband, Doug Grooms; sister, Nancy Oliver; great-granddaughter, Shaylyn Michelle Grooms.

She is survived by her son, Chris (Renee) Grooms; daughter, Joy (Ken) Threet; brother, Billy Wayne Oliver; grandchildren, Ryan (Natassia) Grooms, Alaina (Tim) Rollins, Bailey Threet and Whitney (Taqi) Minter; great-grandchildren, Jaycie, Kailey, Tristan, Landon Blue and Irie.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. CST Monday in the funeral home chapel with Minister John Kennedy and Keith McBee officiating with burial to follow in the Fall Creek Cemetery.

Eastern Star service 6 p.m. CST today in the chapel.

Visitation after 11 a.m. CST today at Layne Funeral Home, Palmer, TN.
