Korean Campaign 1871 Medal of Honor Recipient. He was born in Clure, Ireland. He entered the US Marine Corps at New York. He served as a Private. His citation reads "On board the USS Benicia during the capture of the Korean forts, 11 June 1871. Advancing to the parapet, McNamara wrenched the matchlock from the hands of an enemy and killed him".
