John was the son of James W and Mary Roberts Kanatzar. He was married on Dec 26, 1868 to his first cousin Elizabeth W Kanatzar. Their children were Abe, James, Ora, Jacob T, Fannie H, Waldon Elton, Obie, Forest, and Lois Dollie. John served in the Confederate Army. While in the Army, he would take "a leave of absence". On one occasion, he was closely followed and escaped by hiding in a fireplace chimney with a fire in the fireplace.
