Summary: Jason Russell Childers, 27, is found mortally wounded in the convenience store near University Hospital

A convenience store clerk who worked the night shift for $6 an hour was shot to death in Southwest Portland early Monday morning.

Portland police have no suspects in the shooting that killed Jason Russell Childers, 27, while he worked at a Plaid Pantry store in a quiet neighborhood adjacent to University Hospital.

A customer who arrived at the Plaid Pantry store at 915 S.W. Gibbs St. to buy a cup of coffee at 4:40 a.m. Monday found Childers unconscious on the floor in front of the store's counter, said Lt. Cliff Madison, spokesman of the Portland Police Bureau. The customer called 9-1-1 and when police arrived, they found Childers was dead.

Police detectives did not know if anything was stolen from the store, Madison said. Chris Girard Jr., president of Plaid Pantries Inc., said the most money that would have been in the store would have been $20 to $25.

"That's why it's so baffling, so senseless," Girard said.

Clerks for Plaid Pantry are taught to not resist robberies, giving the robbers what they want and trying to get them out of the store quickly, Girard said. "We don't want any heroes, we don't want anyone hurt," he said.

Madison said he did not know if Childers tried to stop a robbery or if someone simply shot him after entering the store.

Childers died from a gunshot wound to the heart, said Dr. Karen Gunson, deputy state medical examiner. Childers was shot more than once, Gunson said after performing Childers' autopsy Monday afternoon.

Childers, who had worked at the Plaid Pantry for the past six months, was engaged to be married, Girard said. Childers was known as a mild-mannered, gentle man to his co-workers.

Madison said detectives were following leads in the case but had no suspects. He did say that if there was film from a security camera in the store that detectives would review it. Girard said security cameras are in every Plaid Pantry store and they are supposed to have film in them. However, he didn't know if this camera would be helpful in finding who shot Childers.

"But will it show anything? I don't know," he said.

Police say the last customer they knew of had stopped in the store at 2:45 a.m. Detectives are hoping to hear from other customers who might have been at the store later that night, so they can more closely pinpoint when the shooting took place, Madison said.

Anyone with information regarding the shooting is asked to call Portland police detectives at 823-0400
The Oregonian newspaper, Tuesday, March 18, 1997, section B, page B-3.

Nothing came up in the paper during the whole rest of 1997 about this tragic event.

A story was run in the paper in April of 1998, a year after Jason's death offering a 10,000 dollar reward for clues leading to the arrest of the person who murdered him.
