US Congressman. He was admitted to the bar in 1829 and commenced the practice of law in Elkton, Kentucky. From 1831 to 1833, he was member of the State House of Representatives and served in the State Senate in 1846. In 1854, he was elected as a Whig to the Thirty-third Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Presley Underwood Ewing serving until 1855. He was elected as a candidate of the Opposition Party to the Thirty-sixth Congress in 1859 and served until 1861. Not a candidate for reelection, resumed the practice of law and in 1861, he attended the peace convention held in Washington, D.C., to devise means to prevent the impending Civil War. Originally buried at his Todd County estate, Bristow was later reinterred at Glenwood Cemetery in Elkton.
