Mary L. Pugh, 86, of La Plata died Feb. 16, 2005, at her home after a brief illness.

Mrs. Pugh was a member of Scared Heart Church, the Sodality and president of St. Vincent de Paul. She was a librarian at Archbishop Neale School for many years and active in school fundraising activities including Mission Day. Pope John Paul II awarded her the papl honor Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice, meaning "for the church and for the pontiff" in 1984. She was selected as Charles County's Beautiful Citizen for the first Maryand's Most Beautiful People awards in 1987. Additionally, she was selected for membership in the Maryland Senior Citizens Hall of Hall of Fame in 1988. She helped those in need through food and clothing drives.

Born May 14, 1918, in Scotland, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Joseph A. and the late Murial L. Bradburn.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, JohnPugh; brothers, Joseph F. Bradburn, John Brent Bradburn and Francis Bradburn, who was killed during World War II; and sister-in-law, Eleanor Bradburn, wife of John Brent Bradburn.

She is survived by her children, Edith F. Adams of Reno, Nev., John J. Pugh of La Plata and Regina Rison and her husband, Melvin Rison of La Plata; gradnchildren, Frances Schram, David Chase, James Lofgren, Shaun Pugh, Richard and Scott Rison; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., with prayers at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 21 at Arehart-Echols Funeral Home, La Plata. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. Feb. 22 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, La Plata. The Rev. Bob Golas will officiate. Burial took place at Arlington National Cemetery, with her husband, John W. Pugh, at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Society, 5004 2nd Street N.W. No. 1, Washington, D.C. 20011 or Sacred Heart Catholic Church, P.O. Box 1390, La Plata, MD 20646.
