Charles arrived in Vietnam 4 December 1967 and was assigned to A Company, 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry, 101st Airborne Division, USARV.
A Company was on a combat patrol when they engaged hostile forces 11 kilometers south of Phuoc Vinh City. Charles died as a result of gunshot wounds to the body from hostile rifle fire.
Survived by his wife, Paula B Smith of District Heights, Maryland and his father, Herschel Smith and mother, Vera D Smith of Forestville, Maryland.
