Enlisted, 1916, in Depot Squadron A, New York Guard, serving for ten months. He served under the name Samuel Vallance Hyatt Danzig, his name was legally changed to Samuel Hyatt Vallance.

Attended, OTC, and commissioned, 2nd Lieutenant, Cavalry, November 1, 1917 and promoted 1st lieutenant, October 26, 1918. He was assigned to Company D, 8th Machine Gun Battalion, 3rd Division.

The 8th Machine Gun Battalion shipped out for Europe, April 2, 1918. He saw heavy combat till November 11, 1918 He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross ( GO # 98, WD 1919 ) for his actions July 14-15, 1918, near Fossoy, France and July 26, 1918, Le Channel, France. He served in the Army of Occupation after the war.

He returned to the States, August 10, 1919, and resigned September 12, 1919
