William was son of William H. and Elizabeth (Smith) Womersley, and the brother of Alexander Womersley, who also served in Co. B, 18th Massachusetts Infantry. His father emigrated to the United States from England in 1840 and his parents married at Fall River, MA on Jun 10, 1841, with five children being born to the marriage.

William was a 19 year-old Printer from Fall River, MA, when he enlisted at Taunton, MA on July 25, 1861 and was mustered into the 18th Massachusetts. Infantry on August 25, 1861 as a Private in Co. B.

William transferred from the 18th Massachusetts on Dec. 11, 1862 when enlisted in Company M of the 1st United States Cavalry to fill out the terms of his three year enlistment. He was mustered out of military service on Aug. 24, 1864.

Following his military service William resided in Washington, DC, where he was employed by the federal government in the Ordnance Department, Surgeon General's Office, and from 1880 as a Clerk with the Treasury Department until his retirement in 1914. He was a member of the Kit Carson Grand Army of the Republic Post No. 2, and member of the Odd Fellows Friendship Lodge.

William married Esther McGlue at Washington, DC on Oct. 29, 1866 and they were the parents of nine children. His wife Esther died at Washington on Jun 25, 1889. He married for a second time to Mary Ellen Fugitt, the daughter of Charles F. and Laura E., at Washington about 1891. They were the parents of four children.

William died at his home, 4128 Eighth St. NW, Washington, DC. His wife Mary Ellen died at Washington on Nov 10, 1939 and was buried beside him at Arlington National Cemetery.
