Rev. Dr. Edward R. Bannister was the son of Dr. Caleb and Melicent (Stearns) Bannister. He was the husband of Elizabeth "Eliza" Georgiana (Mannering) Bannister. He graduated Wesleyan University, Middletown, Connecticut 1838. He was a minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church: Genesee (now Western New York) Conference 1838 Discontinued 1839 Readmitted Black River Conference 1842 Oneida Conference 1845 Oregon and California Conference about 1850. He served Ogdensburgh, St. Lawrence Co., Ogdensburgh District, New York 1843 - Syracuse, Onondaga Co., Syracuse Dist., New York 1844. He was one of the pioneer settlers of California. In 1851 he became the first president of the University of the Pacific at Santa Clara.
