Police Officer
Sergeant Edward O'Grady and Officer Waverly Brown were shot and killed by heavily armed members of the domestic terrorist group, the Weather Underground. Officer Brown was killed almost instantly. Sgt O'Grady managed to fire all six shots from his service revolver, but was hit multiple times by M16 fire. Ninety minutes later, he died on a hospital operating table.
The suspects were involved in the infamous 1981 Brinks armored truck robbery of over a million dollars. They had just murdered one Brinks guard and wounded two others.
The incident drew national media attention, leading to the arrests of many members of the Weather Underground and Black Liberation Army. In 1986 the last suspect, the ringleader of the robbery, was arrested.
Sgt O'Grady was a Vietnam veteran. He was survived by his wife and three children. His son, Edward J O'Grady III, is a commander in the US Navy and a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
