Son of Brigham and Margaret (Pierce) Young, and his father was leader of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

He founded the church's Young Men's Mutual Improvement Association. He was well known as an entertainer and often performed in drag as "Madam Pattirini," an Italian opera singer.
