William Lewis was a soldier in the Revolution. He was commissioned a Lieutenant in the First Virginia Regiment on October 2, 1775. He was promoted to Captain on September 4, 1776. In May 1779 he was promoted to Major of the Tenth Virginia Regiment. He was captured by the British at Charleston, South Carolina on May 12, 1780 and remained a prisoner until the end of the war.
Sweet Springs Resort was first developed in the 1790s by William Lewis with several log cabins, a courthouse and jail - all used to house those who came to enjoy the benefits of the springs. William's son, John, took over the property in 1805 and built the large brick building in 1839.
