Entrepreneur and scoundrel, purported Doctor, horse breeder and brothel proprietor....He was my Great Great Grandfather.

An excerpt from the Los Angeles Herald 1896:

Meantime Leander Griffln had Installed himself, as it appeared, at trifling cost, on the Atkinson ranch. On September 23 he executed and delivered to Martin & Kurtz a mortgage upon his newly acquired property, to secure a note for $500, payable one year from date to Martin & Kurtz, as commission.

Judge Allen vacated the citation on the ground that the house, after being separated from the land, had changed its nature, and had become personal property. Again Harrison was discontented that a house should have such changeable attributes, and he had Griffin arrested on the charge of stealing a house, but the point was raised that Griffin had not mortgaged the premises and had merely assumed the mortgage and thereupon he was released.

In the light of these facts. Mr. and Mrs. Atkinson allege that the real estate men and Griffin "wickedly and fraudulently and for the purpose of cheating and defrauding the plaintiffs out of their property."

Buried in an unmarked grave for many years....
