John was born in Moltzow, Mecklenburg-Schwerin (Germany).
Johann Grüschow (Grueschow/Gruschow) immigrated to USA on the sailing ship "Humboldt" out of Hamburg, Germany and arriving Aug. 28, 1854 at New York City with his wife, Bernhardina "Bertha" Henriette Christina Burr and John's brothers, sisters, and parents, Frederick & Marie Buttner Gruschow. They then went to Chicago where John's older brother Chris & family had immigrated to in 1853.
John was an apprentice Blacksmith in Marxhagen, Mecklenburg-Schwerin (Ger.) and a Blacksmith for the Chicago & North Western Railroad in 1864. He later opened a Grocery Store in Chicago.

Children: Mrs. Alma Kreutzberg, Mrs. Emily Alborn, Mrs. Bertha Hjerman, Robert H., Frank W., John B. and Hugo F. Gruschow.
