According to Joe and Polly's son, Wade Mainer, Joe's mother was Eliza Mainer. His father was either a Lyda or a Lytle. Joe was raised by his uncle Spain Mainer and chose to take his last name.

1850 is the year listed as his birth date on his death certificate, and it is also on his tombstone, but Wade also said he made a mistake with both. Joe listed his birth month and year as May 1867 on the 1900 census. Wade said that was the accurate year as he was only a couple of years older than his wife, Polly.
