Last rites were held at 3 p.m. yesterday for Dr. Herbert Acuff, internationally known surgeon and civic leader who founded Knoxville's Acuff Clinic.
Dr. Acuff, past president of the International College of Surgeons and past president of Civitan International, died Friday morning at his home, 918 Cherokee Boulevard.
SERVICES CONDUCTED
Funeral services were at First Baptist Church with Dr. Henry J. Stokes Jr., the pastor, and Dr. C.P. Hardin, long-time friend of Dr. Acuff, conducting the services.
The host of persons paying last respects to the eminent surgeon included many physicians and even some patients who had only recently consulted him concerning operations and treatment.
Dr. Acuff had been ill several days of an ailment at first not regarded serious but which led to the development of a fatal heart seizure.
HEADED BUILDING PLANS
The 65-year-old surgeon envisioned many enterprises in earlier life to promote the science of medicine and surgery. he pioneered in the founding of Beverly Hill Sanatorium for tubercular patients and also headed a group of professional men who financed Medical Arts Building.
Messages of condolence have been received by the family of Dr. Acuff from all parts of the country in telephone messages, telegrams and mails bearing words of sympathy.
Interment was in Highland Memorial Cemetery. Physicians were active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were members of Knoxville Academy of Medicine and Knox County Tuberculosis Association.
