Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Born in Caledonia, New York, he had settled in Texas before the Civil War, becoming a successful cattle rancher. When the war began, he lost all his cattle when it was confiscated by Confederate forces. A staunch Unionist, he then enlisted in the Union Army, and was commissioned as a Captain, US Volunteers in United States Army Quartermaster Department on October 7, 1861. He was soon assigned as the Chief Quartermaster of the XIV Army Corps, a duty he performed until being tabbed by Major General George H. Thomas to join his staff. This led him to become the Chief Quartermaster for the whole Army of of the Cumberland, which General Thomas led. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on June 28, 1863, to Colonel on June 9, 1865, and had been brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services during the war". Honorably mustered out on December 6, 1865, he then made his post-war home in New York City, New York, where he started a successful brokerage house with fellow Union Army veteran Edwin Lewis Hayes.
