Robert was the husband of Mary Cathrine (Crawford) Combs and son of Judge Asa & Rebecca (Roser) Combs. His father, Asa Combs died in Washington Co., Arkansas when Robert was 12 years old. His mother then married John Loyd. Shortly afterwards, the family moved to Dallas, Texas.

He enlisted in the 18th Texas Calvary in January of 1862. He was captured on January 11, 1863 in Arkansas Post & exchanged April 7, 1863 in City Point, Virginia.

Occupation: Cattle dealer & farmer

He was the father of:
1. Cora Ann (Combs) (Ducourt) Halford
2. Laura Belle (Combs) Maxwell
3. Robert A. Combs - died at the age of 10
4. Marvin Emil Combs.

He was the brother of:
1. Adeline Combs
2. Samuel Combs
3. Henry Nelson Combs
4. Ruth Ann Combs (possibly married Elisha Jennings)
5. Eliza Jane Combs
6. Mary Elizabeth Combs
7. William Henry Combs
8. Charles Merion Combs

He served during the Civil War in Co. C of the 18th Texas Cavalry.
