The Koerber family came to the US in 1884. They went first to Kansas or Nebraska, where John died during one of their first winters of frostbite of one of his feet.
Afterward, Hannah, Maggie, and Anna moved to Lewis County, Washington. There, on February 18, 1887 Hannah married August Schnarr. She and August had four children (August jr., Gustave, Minnie, and Johan (Johnny)).
On January 14, 1893, Maggie married Jacob Ast, a widower with four children. They had eight children of their own:
Rosa (1895),
(my grandfather) William John (1897),
Margaret Elizabeth (1899),
Ernest (1902),
Ida L. (1904),
Henrietta (1905),
and twins Jakob Ludwig & Minna Louisa (1908).
Unfortunately, only Rosa, William, Elizabeth, & Ida survived to adulthood.
In the early 1900's, the family changed their surname to Aust, as it was easier to pronounce.
In 1913 the family moved back to Ellis County, KS, settling in Hays. Two weeks after they arrived, Jake died within hours of suffering a severe stroke on the street in Hays.
Maggie and the children remained in Hays. And, Maggie died seven years later.
