Hershel is the father of Famous Country Singer/songwriter Jenny Lou Carson, born Virginia Lucille Overstake, the first woman to write a No. 1 country music hit. From 1945 to 1955 she was one of the most prolific songwriters in country music.
Jenny Lou Carson authored "Jealous Heart" for Tex Ritter, a song that stayed on the hit charts for 23 weeks in 1945, and "You Two-Timed Me Once Too Often", the first top country hit written by a woman, which stayed at No. 1 on the country chart for 11 weeks in 1945.
Hershel is Debby Boone's great grandfather.

Herschel Overstake, 42, resident of Decatur until five years ago and father of the"Three Little Maids"on the WLS radio program,died in his home in Bloomington at 2 am today according to word received by relatives here. He has been ill for several weeks.
He was born in La Place, March 1, 1894 and was married to Miss Helen Nalefski in 1912. For the last five years he has been working with his daughters on their WLS program as the"father"of the "Three Little Maids". While a resident of Decatur Mr. Overstake operated an oil station and was employed for a time at the Talbott Bilgere Motor co.
Besides his wife he leaves his mother, Mrs. Laura Overstake, Bloomngton and five children, Mrs. Evelyn Bechtel, Mrs.Eva Foley and Lucille Overstake all of Chicago and Dickie Oversake and Constance Overstake, both of Bloomington. He also leaves a brother Captain Charles Overstake Bloomington and four sisters, Mrs.C.F. Mackey, Toledo, Ohio, Mrs. T.B.Reddis and Mrs.P. B.Talbott both of Decatur and Miss Mabel Overstake, Bloomington. His father, a sister, Pearl and a son Herschel Overstake Jr. preceded him in death.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete but services probably will beheld in Decatur.
