Civil War Veteran US Congressman, At the age of 16, he joined the Confederate army reaching the rank of Sergeant. After the war he graduated from South Carolina Medical College at Charleston in 1885 and practiced medicine periodically throughout his life. He served as a member of the South Carolina State Senate from 1890 to 1893 before being elected to represent South Carolina's 5th District in the United States House of Representatives. He served in Congress from 1893 to 1899.
