Oscar "Ossie" Gilstrap was the son of John Stevens and Mary Stewart Gilstrap, and the husband of Edith Robinson Gilstrap. He was 24 years old when he was shot and killed by cafe operator P.D. Smith, in the Smith Cafe, located at the corner of Main and South Main Streets in Liberty, SC.

A newspaper report of the incident is available in the Greenville News, September 20, 1930 edition, page 7.

At the time of his death he was survived by his parents and his wife; three sisters, Miss Vesta Gilstrap, Miss Mary Gilstrap, and Miss Elvira Gilstrap, all of Liberty; and four brothers, Robert T. Gilstrap, Willie Gilstrap, Frank Gilstrap, Henry Gilstrap, and Lewis Gilstrap, all of Liberty.

His funeral was held Sunday, September 21, 1930 at the Liberty First Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. George T. Pennell and Rev. A.M. Simmons.

Burial: West View Cemetery, Liberty.
