Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. With the outbreak of the Civil War. Pope joined the 8th New York Cavalry as captain of the 1st brigade. He rose through the ranks from captain to major and lieutenant colonel; and was for a time the acting assistant inspector general on the staff of Brigadier General George A. Custer. He participated in the battles of Harper's Ferry, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Brandy Station, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Winchester, and Cedar Creek. On February 25, 1865, Pope received command of the 8th New York Cavalry with the rank of colonel. He led the unit on the Appomattox campaign that resulted in the surrender of General Robert E. Lee and his army on April 9, 1865. On March 13, 1865, he received the commission of brevet brigadier general "for faithful services during the war." After the war, he moved to Minnesota and became involved in the lumber and real estate businesses. He also became involved in politics as a member of the Democratic party.
