Clothing Retailer and Rabbi. Born in Germany, he arrived in Columbus, Ohio in 1850 and opened the Lazarus store in 1850. He was assisted by his wife Amelia and sons Fred and Ralph, and his store began to be successful primarily attributable to the mass manufacture of men's uniforms for the Civil War which led the family to expand the business to include ready-made men's civilian clothing and eventually a complete line of merchandise. He also served as the first Rabbi of Central Ohio's oldest Reform synagogue, Temple Israel. His sons joined the business and added innovative marketing techniques. After his death in 1877, his widow Amelia continued running the store with their two sons. It was after Amelia's death in 1899 that the store was renamed The F&R Lazarus & Company which is today known as Macy's, Inc, a major retail holding company in the United States.
