Sgt. Anthony O. Magee, 29, of Hattiesburg, Miss., died April 27 at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, of wounds sustained April 24 when enemy forces attacked his unit with indirect fire at Contingency Operating Base Kalsu, Iskandariyah, Iraq. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Benning, Ga.
Magee received the Purple Heart on Thursday for being injured in the line of duty.
Army retired Sgt. 1st Class Dennis Davis released a statement his brother, Tony Davis - Magee's father, issued on behalf of the family.
"We have lost a son, a father and a hero today who dedicated his life to the service of our nation," the statement read. "His family would like to thank the entire community and nation for their thoughts and prayers."
Dennis Davis said Magee was serving his second tour of duty in Iraq. He said Magee also was injured in his first tour of duty.
Jas N Smith, spokesman for the Hattiesburg Public School District, said Magee graduated from Hattiesburg High School in 2000. Smith said having Tony Davis, chief of resource officers for the district, work with local employees brought the war close to home.
"We have total love and respect for his family, and we just want to let them know our thoughts and prayers are with them right now," he said. "We wish there was some condolence we could offer that would convey the sacrifice Anthony made."
Magee is survived by his mother and father, Patricia and Tony Davis; three siblings; his wife, Courtney Magee; and his 5-year-old son, Kameron Johnson, according to Dennis Davis.
"He had a great sense of humor, he had the biggest heart, which you can see by him being an organ donor," Davis said. "He was one of the nicest young men you'd ever want to come into contact with."
No funeral arrangements had been made as of late Friday. Information on the return of Magee's body to Hattiesburg is not yet complete, Dennis Davis said.
