The Evening Express Rochester 29 May 1865
Died, in Naples, Ontario County, NY, May 20th, 1865, in the 84th year of her age, Mrs. Mary Clark, relict of the late Major Joseph Clark, and mother of Ex-Governor Clark. The deceased was among the pioneers to settle in "the Genesee country," having emigrated with the family of her father, Elisha Sutton, from Northumberland, PA, in the year 1800, and settled near the present village of Gorham, Ontario County. She was married in 1805 to Joseph Clark, son of Col. Wm. Clark, one of the first settlers in the town of Naples. In the war of 1812-14, her husband was a commissioned officer, was taken prisoner at the battle of Fort
Erie, and convoyed to Halifax, where he was kept until the close of the war. During her husband's absence the deceased patiently endured the hardships consequent to the circumstances, and arduously and faithfully performed the high trusts and holy duties of a zealous Christian wife and mother, at home. She early embraced the Christian's hope, and was constant in inculcating religious principles and good morals in the family and in the community. She was ardently devoted to the temperance cause, and at a very early day took an active part in the organization of a Female Temperance Society in the town, which has had its beneficial and lasting influences. She was indefatigable in the care, education and welfare of her family of sons, who have filled prominent and honorable places of trust, and usefulness in society, which are among the evidences of her true worth and moral greatness. The deceased was blessed with a good constitution, and was permitted to fill a long period of usefulness to her family and the community, to whom she has left a legacy of good examples, precepts and kindnesses, and died as she has lived, in the precious hope of a blissful immortality.
