Bernard Anthony Appel, 84, of Chillicothe passed away Thursday, May 6, 2010, at his residence.

Born Jan. 6, 1926, in Henry, Ill., to Anton and Ellen (Reismeyer) Appel, he married Bernadine Schierer on Sept. 20, 1947, in Washburn, Ill.

Surviving are his wife, Bernadine of Chillicothe; his children, Diane Johnson of Chillicothe, Judy Hawley of Princeville, Ill., Sandy (Paul) Bundy of Peoria, Nancy Reffett of Chillicothe, Kenneth Appel of Lacon and Marie Zannacker of Chillicothe. Also surviving is one brother, James Appel of Chillicothe.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and one brother.

He was a World War II veteran, serving in the Army, and was a member of the American Legion Post 9 and VFW Post 4999.

Bernard was a custodian for IVC School District 321, retiring in 1991. He also worked as a policeman for the Chillicothe City Police Department from April 1959 to June 1962, holding several positions.

He was member of St. Edward Catholic Church, where he was a custodian for the school.

Burial will be in the Chillicothe City Cemetery.
