German aviation pioneer. In April of 1928, World War I veteran Köhl, Baron Ehrenfried Günther von Hünefeld, and James Fitzmaurice of Ireland became the first aviators to cross the Atlantic Ocean from East to West (Europe to America). They flew an all-metal Junkers monoplane (named the "Bremen") from Baldonnel, Ireland, to Greenly Island in the province of Labrador, Canada. Their original destination had been New York City, but a navigational miscalculation sent them to a Canadian landing instead.
